The Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany is a well-known research institution that offers paid internship opportunities to international students. This is a fully funded internship program that covers living costs, air ticket, housing, and lots more. Applications are ongoing and will last until the 1st of November every year. This internship program is open to outstanding Bachelors, Masters and PhD students all over the world, and also exceptional individuals from industry interested in gaining academic research experience in computer science. Typically, internships lasts 12-14 weeks, but longer internships are possible. Note that, Intern positions are limited and admissions to the internship program are very competitive.

NOTE:

Interns are welcomed all year round, but most interns prefer the summer period. No German knowledge is required as all participating institutions uses English as their main language of study. If you are selected as an intern, you are going to work with a research group at one of the participating institutes, and then, a faculty mentor will be assigned to work with you directly.

Visa Support and Required Documents

If you have been selected for the internship, a study visa will be required to study in Germany. You will be provided with the necessary documents by Max Planck Institute to obtain a visa.

Note that, applying for your visa on time through a local German consulate depends on you. If the embassy or consulate asks for visa fees, contact the Max Planck Institute and inform them about the visa cost and they will pay.

You will be required to provide some documents like:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Educational Transcripts
  • Contact information for at least one reference
  • An optional motivational letter

Application Deadlines

Please make sure you apply by the following deadlines:

  • For internships starting between May and August, apply by November 1 of the previous year
  • For internships starting at any other time of the year, please apply at least 5 months before your intended starting date

  • Application is done online. Submit your application via https://apply.cis.mpg.de/register/internship
  • You can as well optionally select faculty members at the participating institutes with whom you would like to work with and your internship duration.
  • Your application will then be reviewed by research groups, and might be contacted for a phone interview
  • Your will receive a notification on the outcome of your application.
